Angel Island Immigration Station

Tiburon , United States

About this museum

Between 1910 and 1940, the fog - wrapped island at the northern edge of San Francisco Bay processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants arriving from Asia - Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, South Asian, and others - through a system designed less to welcome than to interrogate, detain, and frequently exclude. The Angel Island Immigration Station was the West Coast's answer to Ellis Island, but it operated on fundamentally different principles: where Ellis Island processed European immigrants rapidly and largely admitted them, Angel Island detained Asian immigrants for weeks, months, and sometimes years under conditions that were deliberately harsh. The Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation has worked for decades to preserve the physical evidence of this history and to ensure that the stories of those detained here are not lost. The barracks where immigrants were held still bear poetry carved into the wooden walls by detainees who had no other way to express what they were enduring - some of the most powerful documents in American immigration history, literally inscribed in the walls of their captivity. With 182 reviews averaging 4.7 stars, the site draws visitors who recognize that this is not comfortable history but necessary history - a counterweight to the Ellis Island narrative that helps explain the full complexity of American immigration policy and the people who were shaped by it. Reaching Angel Island requires a ferry from Tiburon or San Francisco, which adds a layer of physical engagement to the journey. The station is open daily from 11AM to 2:30PM.Admission to the immigration station is free, though ferry costs and a nominal state park fee apply. Visit aiisf.org for ferry schedules and current programming, including docent - led tours that bring individual testimonies into vivid, human focus.
