Frick Art and Historical Center
About this museum
In Pittsburgh's Point Breeze neighborhood, tucked behind stone gates on a wooded estate that once belonged to one of the Gilded Age's most formidable industrialists, the Frick Art and Historical Center offers a view of turn - of - the - century American wealth and culture that is both dazzling and unexpectedly human in scale. Henry Clay Frick - the coke and steel magnate whose partnership with Andrew Carnegie helped build a Pittsburgh fortune - built Clayton as his family home, and the mansion still conveys the texture of daily life as it was lived circa 1905: the furniture precisely arranged, the family photographs in place, the kitchen equipped exactly as it would have been when the household was fully staffed. A guided house tour through Clayton is the center's signature experience, but the campus extends well beyond the mansion. The Car and Carriage Museum houses a remarkable collection of antique vehicles, from elegant carriages to early automobiles, that document the transition between animal power and engine power at the precise moment Frick's world was experiencing it. An elegant cafe with garden views provides a civilized counterpoint to the historical intensity of the house tour. With a rating of 4.6 stars and open Saturdays from 10 AM to 5 PM - with additional weekday hours available - the Frick Art and Historical Center is one of Pittsburgh's most rewarding cultural destinations. Admission is free. Visit thefrickpittsburgh.org for full hours and tour reservations. The center is located at 7227 Reynolds Street in Pittsburgh. This is the kind of place that justifies a trip to Pittsburgh on its own.
