Historic New Orleans Collection

New Orleans , United States

About this museum

Royal Street in the French Quarter is dense with antique shops, jazz bars, and restaurants, but at number 520 there's something altogether different: a cluster of historic, carefully restored buildings that constitute the Historic New Orleans Collection, one of the finest research and exhibition institutions dedicated to the history and culture of Louisiana and the Gulf South. What began as the private collection of General L. Kemper Williams and his wife Leila Moore Williams has grown into a multi - building complex that is part museum, part archive, and entirely essential for anyone who wants to understand New Orleans beyond the party. The exhibition galleries occupy restored 18th - and 19th - century Creole buildings, some of which survived both fire and flood, and the architecture is itself an argument for preservation. Inside, the exhibitions rotate through material drawn from the collection's vast holdings - maps, photographs, manuscripts, artworks, and objects that chronicle New Orleans from its earliest colonial years through the present. The Royal Street campus also hosts a cafe, making it a natural midday stop on any extended French Quarter exploration.Rated an impressive 4.8 out of 5 by more than 800 visitors, the Historic New Orleans Collection is consistently praised for the quality and depth of its presentations. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday; Tuesday through Saturday hours run 9:30AM to 4:30PM, Sunday from 10:30AM to 4:30PM, with Monday closures. Admission to the galleries is free, though some specialized tours of the historic buildings carry a modest fee - a worthwhile investment for anyone with a deep interest in Louisiana history. Find the full tour schedule and exhibition calendar at hnoc.org. For travelers who move through New Orleans with serious cultural curiosity, the Historic New Orleans Collection at 520 Royal Street is not optional.
