At the edge of the San Joaquin Valley, where the grain fields give way to the tule marshes along the San Joaquin River, the MARC Nature Center preserves something increasingly rare in California's intensively farmed heartland: a functioning wetland ecosystem that draws birds in numbers that can seem almost implausible. The 10.2 - acre site of wetlands and grasslands at 10362 Retreat Way in Merced has earned a reputation among birders as a legendary wintering habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds - and that reputation is well - deserved. During peak winter months, the ponds and marsh edges can host thousands of ducks, geese, herons, egrets, dowitchers, and sandpipers, alongside raptors drawn in by the dense waterfowl concentrations.
