江戸時代、東海道舞坂宿は江戸から30番目の宿場にあたり、東西交通を結ぶ今切渡しの渡船場でした。今日、当時をしのぶ町並みは失われてしまいましたが、天保9年（1838）建築の旧脇本陣「茗荷屋」の上段の間があった書院棟が残されていました。旧東海道では唯一の脇本陣の遺構です。この貴重な脇本陣を後世に伝えようと、建物を復元しました。
