National Women's Rights Historical Park Visitor Center

Seneca Falls , United States

About this museum

On a July morning in 1848, nearly three hundred people gathered in a chapel in Seneca Falls, New York, to consider whether the principle that all men are created equal might be extended to women. The Declaration of Sentiments they produced that day - modeled explicitly on Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, and asserting that all men and women are created equal - launched the formal American women's rights movement and set in motion a struggle that would not reach its first major legal victory until 72 years later with the passage of the 19th Amendment. The National Women's Rights Historical Park Visitor Center in Seneca Falls is the federal government's tribute to that convention and to the movement it ignited. The visitor center at 136 Fall Street serves as the interpretive anchor for a National Park Site that encompasses multiple historic properties in Seneca Falls and nearby Waterloo, including the Wesleyan Chapel where the 1848 convention was held. Exhibits trace the lives and contributions of the women who organized the convention - Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and their collaborators - and follow the long arc of the women's rights movement through the 19th and 20th centuries. The stories here are both inspiring and sobering, a reminder of how recently many Americans were denied basic civic rights and how hard the struggle to secure them actually was. With a 4.6 - star rating from an impressive 1, 240 visitors, the park visitor center has earned its place as one of the most significant historical sites in upstate New York. Admission is free, as is appropriate for a site administered by the National Park Service. The visitor center is located at 136 Fall Street in Seneca Falls and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. Seneca Falls is a natural base for exploring the Finger Lakes region, and the Women's Rights National Historical Park should be at the top of every itinerary. This is where modern American civic history truly begins.
