About this museum
In the summer of 1847, roughly 70, 000 Mormon pioneers began crossing the American West in one of the largest overland migrations in history - on foot, in wagons, and eventually pushing handcarts across terrain that killed many of them and tested the rest beyond any previous experience. The Pioneer Memorial Museum in Salt Lake City exists to ensure that those founders and the world they built are not forgotten, and the scale of what has been assembled within this massive building is a measure of how seriously that mission has been taken. The museum's holdings encompass paintings, photographs, manuscripts, diaries, personal memorabilia, quilts, clothing, tools, and furniture from the pioneers who built early Utah, organized across dozens of rooms and galleries that together constitute one of the most comprehensive repositories of Mormon pioneer material culture anywhere. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, who operate the museum, have been collecting since 1901, and the depth of the archive reflects more than a century of disciplined acquisition. What distinguishes the Pioneer Memorial Museum from conventional history museums is the granularity of the family stories embedded in its collections. This is not just the history of a migration or a religion - it is the history of specific individuals, specific families, specific crossings and settlements, preserved in the objects and documents those people left behind. Visiting feels like opening a correspondence that has waited over a century for a reader. With a 4.7 rating from 549 visitors, the museum draws consistent appreciation for its depth and the warmth of its volunteer staff. Admission is free, as confirmed at isdup.org. Hours run Monday through Friday from 9AM to 4:30PM, with the museum closed on weekends. Located at 300 North Main Street in Salt Lake City, Utah - a short walk from Temple Square and the heart of the city's historic core.
