Planet Word
About this museum
There are museums about science, museums about art, museums about war - and then there is Planet Word, a museum devoted entirely to language itself, which turns out to be one of the most ambitious and joyful cultural institutions in Washington, D.C. Housed in the restored Franklin School, a magnificent 19th - century landmark at 925 13th Street Northwest, this is a place where words are not just displayed but performed, sung, parsed, and played with at every turn. The immersive exhibits here ask visitors to engage with language actively - not as passive readers but as participants in the great human project of making meaning from sound and symbol. The Franklin School building is itself part of the experience. Completed in 1869 and designed by Adolf Cluss, it was one of the finest public school buildings in the capital and later served as a homeless shelter before its meticulous restoration. Walking its halls - with their soaring ceilings, arched windows, and carefully preserved architectural details - is to encounter a place that has educated and sheltered generations of Washingtonians, now repurposed for a new kind of learning. Planet Word's designers understood that the building's own history was an asset, and they've woven it into the visitor experience. The exhibits span spoken word, storytelling, poetry, foreign languages, the mechanics of grammar, and the social lives of words - how they change, spread, die, and get born again in new forms. The karaoke installations, where visitors sing lyrics on - screen and think about how those words work, are a particular crowd - pleaser. With an extraordinary 4.8 - star rating across more than 2, 300 reviews, Planet Word is one of the most enthusiastically reviewed free museums in the country. Admission is completely free. Hours run Monday through Friday 10 AM to 5 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM; closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Visit planetwordmuseum.org for more.
