About this museum
There are interpretive centers that feel like bureaucratic obligations, and there are those that feel like gifts. The Point Vicente Interpretive Center in Rancho Palos Verdes falls decisively into the second category, perched on the edge of the Palos Verdes Peninsula with nothing but the Pacific Ocean stretching west to the horizon. On a clear day - and there are many of them here - Santa Catalina Island resolves from the haze about 26 miles offshore, and in winter and spring, gray whales pass in a slow, magnificent procession along the migration route that runs just off the kelp beds below the bluffs. The center serves the coastal park that surrounds it, and its exhibits weave together the natural and cultural history of this dramatic stretch of coastline. The geology of the Palos Verdes Hills is on display in the cliffs themselves, dramatically folded sedimentary layers recording tens of millions of years of tectonic activity. Inside, exhibits cover the marine mammals of the California coast, the Gabrielino - Tongva people who have lived in the region for thousands of years, and the natural ecology of the coastal sage scrub and kelp forest ecosystems that make the peninsula a conservation priority. The adjacent Point Vicente Lighthouse, built in 1926, adds a historical layer that resonates particularly with maritime history enthusiasts. The surrounding park trails offer some of the finest coastal walking in Los Angeles County, which is saying something in a region blessed with extraordinary shoreline. The interpretive center is open on Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM. Admission is free. Find more information at rpvca.gov. Given its western - facing position, the center is especially beautiful in the late afternoon, when the light on the water turns copper and gold.
