The Broad Museum
About this museum
When the Broad opened on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles in 2015, it immediately transformed the cultural geography of the city's civic center. The building - designed by Diller Scofidio and Renfro - announced itself with a perforated concrete and fiberglass veil wrapped around a form that became known, inevitably, as the honeycomb. Inside, the veil - and - vault structure creates gallery spaces of unusual warmth and flexibility while concealing a massive art storage vault visible through glass from the lobby. It is one of the most talked - about pieces of architectural theater in the city. With nearly 17, 500 reviews averaging 4.7 stars, the Broad has earned the enthusiasm. Eli and Edythe Broad assembled one of the most significant private contemporary art collections in the world over five decades, and their decision to open it freely to the public - general admission is free, though timed - entry tickets are recommended - was among the more consequential acts of cultural generosity in recent Los Angeles history. The collection is strongest in postwar and contemporary American art, with particular depth in artists who reshaped what painting and sculpture could mean: Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Jean - Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Roy Lichtenstein, and Mark Tansey are all well represented. The museum's most famous resident is Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room, for which timed reservations fill weeks in advance - book early. The Broad is located at 221 South Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. It is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 11AM to 5PM, Thursday from 11AM to 8PM, Friday from 11AM to 5PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 6PM, closed Monday. Admission to the permanent collection is free. Visit thebroad.org to reserve your ticket.
